be wary of your wishes

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

We’ve all heard that expression.  “Be careful what you wish for.”  I subscribe to that only in the sense of being specific when you wish or dream.  I know people that really believe that what they focus on is what they will manifest.  I suppose I’m one of them.  But sometimes, you have to be a bit more specific about what it is you truly want.  You also have to keep your eyes open because sometimes it comes to you in odd ways.

You know I’m not sure where this is coming from.  To be honest, when I started working on this comic the inspiration was something different altogether.  It came from a reader who was ‘waiting for something to happen’.  Bored.  I explained that I live in a fairly small city that could seem rather dry of cultural, fun stuff to do (especially when you are originally from New York, which I am) but I tend to dig around each week, scouring the alternative paper (Creative Loafing) and keeping an eye out for flyers and such at local music stores, coffee houses or art galleries.  I’ve learned over the last year that there is a hell of a lot happening around here and there are loads of interesting, creative people responsible.

Okay, so the comic had two themes.  (I’m trying to figure out where I’m going with this.) I guess it has to do with several projects I’m involving myself in.  In one way, I’m being proactive and being one of the people that make stuff happen which is exciting.  In doing this I’m also getting what I’ve wished for (in this case, art exposure and the opportunity to collaborate on pieces with someone I admire) which is also exciting but also kinda terrorfying.  It is easy to say you want something.  When you go ahead and create the opportunity to get it, well then you have to live up to your own expectations. Something like that.  😛

Hope you enjoyed the comic, at any rate. Be sure to check out my art prints and goth greeting cards over on etsy because buying stuff is really fun!

Hehe, i am willing to bet she knew all along they were on a living creature. The little fangs on the creature crack me up. Great job as usual.

Wishes are like a lazy dream. A dream you work for typically while a wish is for something higher than you to give you your request free of charge. Guess that’s why we do so much wishing in our lives hehe.

    I love that papers title.

    A wish is granted.
    Beware the capricious gods’
    odd sense of humor.

    Since in general
most wishes fall on deaf ears
    can you hear me now?

    Hello!
Sorry i haven’t posted for so long.
Anyway, wanned to say that i’d love to be sitting on the Loch Ness Monster (if that’s him, of course) but saddly i believe that he choked to death on a coke bottle years ago. or just got poisoned by radioactive waste dumped in the river.. of course he’d always be welcome at my doorstep to proove me wrong but. 😀

  6. Seraphine Says:

be careful what you wish for is a theme i’m interested in also! haha, i must make two hundred wishes a day. just the economics of wishing- toss enough wishes out there, a few might come true- is awesome enough, without wasting wishes on stuff you know won’t come true.
    love this week’s comic, calan.

    wishes can come true
    like accidental spilt milk
    drink, use safe-t-cup

  7. calan Says:

good to see you again Raven. i thought Nessy, the loch ness monster, died from eating pop rocks and drinking coke at the same time. exploding belly-itis or something. 😛

Sera – cute haiku. hey! will you be at the SL convention here in Tampa this weekend? i’m crashing it. O.o

  8. Seraphine Says:

tampa california? that must be down by la-la
because it’s no where near san francisco.
or else, it’s clear across country. aren’t
you supposed to stay home this weekend
    because of another hurricane?

  9. calan Says:

no hurricane yet. the sl con was really fun but i am one sleepy kitten today. (yawnz) maybe next year, sera…
