young entrepreneur

Here’s the place I mentioned last week. I’m almost hesitant to blahg about it as it’s so cool and I want to be able to stay there whenever I have the whim. But, because I love you all and I know you can keep a secret, I’ll share. Promise me you wont tell the rest of the internet, k?

Located in the not too thrilling area of Brandon, FL, just 2 mins off a typical street littered with the usual eye numbing gas stations and strip malls is a time portal. “No way”, you say? I say, “Way!”

Behind the Fence is a bed and breakfast like no other, at least not in this area. It’s nestled, well…behind a fence, in a wooded area and hosts two cabins and a main house. For about 90 bucks you get your own cabin for the night, a lagoon style swimming pool and in the morning yummy Amish sweet rolls and great conversation with the charming proprietor, Carolyn.

I can’t recommend this place highly enough. She and her husband put a lot of heart into the place and want you to feel transported to the 1700s. Did I mention it’s a little on the spooky side, especially if you arrive during a torrential storm in the dead of night. 🙂
Here’s some pics. I’m out.

Vendetta reminds me of these little kids on my block–they were waving down cars on a hot summer day. In memory of my own failed lemonade stand from my childhood (never sold a single cup) I always try to make reasonable purchases from young entrepreneurs.

When I leaned out the window to find out what they were up to, the little boy said they were collecting money. When I asked what for, he pointed to his little sister who showed me the pledge drive sheet, which was clearly misappropriated from some other charity.

“But what are you guys collecting the money for?” I asked again. “For HER!” said the boy. “My sister needs money!”

“But what does she need the money for?” I pressed the boy, while the girl squirmed and sported an impish smile. “To buy stuff!”

Well, I bit my lip and kindly teased them a bit about how they need a more worthy charity if they’re going to expect donations. Then I drove away, a little bit wiser, but a lot more entertained. 🙂

ha! that’s a great story. the little imp, she’ll probably be a zillionaire one day.

  3. Adam_Y Says:

You had me at ‘Amish sweet rolls’…

(We don’t really have the Amish over here, let alone their sweet treats.)

Those dolls are, however, just creepy.

    I wish when I was a kid I had opened a beer
stand. I think I could have made some serious
green (less payment of some “protection” beer)
because we had a lot of delinquents in my hood.

  5. Seraphine Says:

    you’re selling the flu?
then i’ll take two because its
    for valentines day

  6. coolioness Says:

    Flu shots? I’ll take one!
Or two or ten, for all of
    my little stalkers.

Ah, Ven, if only you were really selling the flu…

Dude, Behind the Fence looks just plain NEAT. …Too bad I have zero transportation. =(

  7. calan Says:

at the moment neither do i coolio. 🙁

*does the transmission healing voodoo dance*

Adam, those dolls are creepy, yah, but you should have seen the dress hanging in the bedroom. a tiny dress from the early 1900s …just waiting for me to fall asleep so it could puff up with the form of a dead little girl, float over to the bed and strangle me.

Loved the comic. I just hope she shares a little bit of the money with gingerdead.

My goodness Calan you keep finding the coolest places. It’s enough to make me want to move to Florida. But then I would have to leave what is arguably the best city in the world. Damn, I’m all conflicted now 🙁

  10. calan Says:

starguy, ven asked me to ask you what this ‘sharing’ concept you speak of is 😛

florida can be lame but if you dig a little it’s definitely got some cool stuff. my little city isn’t bad at all (st. petersburg), but i want to know where you are? i’m wondering if i’ve been to the bestest city in the world yet.

i’d say galway, ireland is one of the best cities i’ve ever been to. actually lived there for a good 9 months or so. i’m from new york so that will always be special to me. paris, i visited for just a few days but by the last day i was feeling the rythym of the city in such a profound way it actually was painful to leave…one day i’ll return. amsterdam had some killer architecture and um, interesting cafes 😛

i have a thing for portland which i’ve never been to but am drawn to for no apparant reason. seattle is on the gonna visit list too.

hmm, been a lot of places, want to go to a lot more…so where are you?

    Bravo, Calan! Bravo!

  12. EvilCouch Says:

No, no. I’m not kidding. If you were to offer that as a t-shirt, I would purchase it.

  13. Rodro Says:

    its all in the wording…..

  14. Seraphine Says:

I’ve been enjoying this flu comic all week.
    I’m a little sorry there’s a new one
tomorrow. Oh hell, what am I saying! A
new comic tomorrow! I love Wednesdays.

  15. calan Says:

hiya EvilCouch 🙂 good to virtually ‘see’ you again. glad you likes it. one of these days i’m going to do some new t-shirts or paint some or something…idk. anyway, i’ll keep this one in mind 🙂

  16. Ratchet Says:

Now I’ll never get my flu shot (my boss is so pissed that I don’t)
My worst fears have been made sort of reality.
