fingerpaint (haiku)
Friday, February 16th, 2007As promised, a bonus haiku comic to wrap up the mini story arc. As always, your haiku comments are most welcome but regular comments are okay too, as long as they are gushing about how wonderful the comic is.
A note on haikus:
I have been working with the traditional english haiku format of 5,7,5, but contemporary free from haikus can be less than 17 syllables. Haikus originated in Japan and 17 syllables in English are more wordy than 17 syllables in Japanese. Scholars actually have stated that 11/12 syllables in English are closest to the Japanese form. My point isn’t to confuse you but to let you know that you need not stick to the 5,7,5 structure.
The essence of the haiku is what is important. The idea is to use imagery with brevity; with few words, paint the image in the reader’s mind. Haikus can be wonderfully challenging or just silly and fun. I encourage you to try.
Here’s a nice article on contemporary haikus and aha poetry’s haiku section with tons of info and examples.
That’s all for now. See you on Wednesday.

In the spirit of sharing haiku, I offer-up this web-comic archive from “Questionable Content”:

…& look in panel #2.
In the NEXT day’s strip (same URL, but the last digit=2), there are haiku in panels #1 & #4.
Enjoy.
